Kerr was born on February 20, 1983 in Sydney, Australia, and raised near Brisbane, in the Australian rural town of Gunnedah. Her mother's name is Therese, and she has a younger brother named Matthew. She began modeling in 1997, at the age of 13, after winning the Dolly/Impulse Modeling Competition. Local media used her youth as an opportunity to debate about pedophilia and the acceptable age that girls should start modeling, but she kept on working non-stop, appearing often in magazines such as ELLE, Harper's Bazaar, and Vogue. Her fame increased when she was selected as one of the faces to promote the cosmetics giant, Maybelline. and was hand selected as the new face of American fashion brand ARDEN B. In 2006 she was the first ever Australian model to appear in a Victoria's Secret runway show and is one of the models being considered to replace Gisele Bundchen as one of the Victoria's Secret Angels, and she moved to New York.
