LaVon was born in Louisville, Kentucky. She graduated from the Youth Performing arts School Of Louisville and began attending Millikin University. She spent her summers from college performing at Six Flags Great America until graduating from Millikin with a Bachelor’s of Fine Art Degree in musical theatre. She then moved to Gainesville Florida she attended the University of Florida. While attending UF she founded the performing group Nubian Alegria, began her professional theatre career with the Hippodrome State Theatre, which lead to her receiving an Actors Equity Card. She graduated from the UF with a Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Theatre.

LaVon made her Broadway debut in The Color Purple as understudy for Sophia and swing for the women’s Ensemble. She then succeeded Carol Woods, by being cast as Mama Morton in Broadway’s Chicago the Musical. LaVon has also had the privilege of being apart of many great theatre productions such as: Blackbirds of Broadway, Beehive the Sixties Musical, Rocky Horror Show, Honky Tonk Angels, A Streetcar Named Desired ( all Hippodrome State Theatre), Chicago, Smokey Joes Café, The who’s Tommy(Seaside Music Theatre) Dream girls(West Coast Tour), Once on this Island( Centerstage Theatre),Jelly’s last Jam( The Alliance), Amadeus(Actors Theatre of Louisville),Don’t Bother Me I Can’t Cope(Atlanta Color Theater), Star light and Show biz ( Mill Mountain theatre) and Crowns ( The Asolo Theater Company), and The Alberta Hunter Story ( Geva and Studio Arena Theatre).

Lavon has received the Suzi Award for her portrayal of her role as Gran Mimi in Jelly’s Last Jam at the Alliance. She was the southern region winner in 1997 and 1998 of the Irene Ryan Award at the American Collegiate Theatre Festival. She was listed as one of the Outstanding Students of the Millikin University and University of Florida.
