When not acting, Julia enjoys horse-riding, tennis, gymnastics, swimming and playing the piano. In 2005, at age 12, Julia Winter broke the film scene when she was cast in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (2005), director Tim Burton's adaptation of the 1964 Roald Dahl children's novel of the same name. In the second film adaptation of the book that stars Johnny Depp and Freddie Highmore, Winter portrayed Veruca Salt, the only child of a wealthy parents (her father played by James Fox) and a terribly spoiled brat who becomes the second child to find a ticket, and the third to misbehave and get thrown out of the tour.

Winter's name was instantly catapulted toward spotlight as the film became a box office success and received positive critical reaction. It received an Academy Award nomination in 2006 for Best Costume Design.

Afterwards, Winter provided her voice to the video game version of the film, which was released on the Microsoft Xbox, Sony PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, Game Boy Advance, and PC platforms. Most of the main cast from the film provided their voices for the game except for Johnny Depp, who was replaced by James Arnold Taylor as the voice of Willy Wonka. The game was released in the middle of the year to coincide with the release of the film in theatres.

As of 2007, Winter has never made another film. She continues to sharpen her craft by studying drama weekly at a part-time theatre school.
