Alberto Barbera At the end of the seventies began to work with the Ajax (Italian Association of Friends of Art-house Cinemas) of Turin in which he holds the office of president from 1977 to 1989. From 1980 to 1983 he holds the book of the film critic of the Daily Gazette of the people.
In 1982 he began a long collaboration with the International Youth Film Festival (now Turin Film Festival), of which he became Secretary-General, a member of the Selection Committee (from 1984 to 1988 ) and Director since 1989 , a role he plays until 1998 when he was asked to direct the Venice International Film Festival of Venice.
As evaluated positively by most of the press and by the industry, the management of Barbera's Venice does not receive the approval of the Minister of Culture Giuliano Urbani , which requires the removal of the director in early 2002. Since autumn 2002 Barbera is co-director of RING! festival of film criticism that takes place in Alexandria .
