When Colorado Avalanche Goaltender Patrick Roy was 7 years old, he used to take his father's belts,wrap them around two pillows, and attach them to his legs. Instant goalie pads!Then Stephane,Patrick's 4-year old brother,would take a stick and smack tennis balls at him in the hallway of their house.Very few tennis balls got past Patrick. And today 27 years later very few Pucks get past him! Patrick has been voted the NHL's top goalie three times. Patrick began playing hockey in his hometown of Quebec City Quebec, Canada, at age 6. At first, he preferred scoring goals. But one day one of the neighborhood goalies was hurt, so patrick volunteered to play goalie- and liked it. He's been goalie ever since. Growing up, Patrick played goalie for midget and junior leagues. When he was 19, the Canadiens made him their fourth-round pick in the 1985 NHL draft.Even though he had grown up rootng for the Quebec Nordiques, he felt lucky to have been drafted by the Canadiens, who have a long, proud history in Canada."it was a dream come true, to be playing in my province and for Canada's team," Patrick says.In the 1985-86 season, patrick's rookie season, he led the canadiens to their 23rd stanley cup championship. He allowed an average of 1.92 goals per game during the playoffs and was voted the MVP. Seven years later, he led the Canadiens to another cup and won his second playoff MVP award. Patrick may be one of the most superstitious hockey players in the league! Patrick will not skate on blue/red lines, he writes the names of his kids on his stick before each game.He talks to his goalposts. he calls them his friends and tells them not to allow any small, black objects (like pucks) inside! That may sound silly but if you're a goalie, you need to have positive thoughts in your head. "A big part of the game is played between your ears," Says Patrick. Patrick Roy was traded by montreal with Mike Keane to Colorado for Jocelyn Thibault, Martin Rucinsky and Andre Kovalenko on December 6th 1995. Roy was one of the only five NHL players who was considered a "Franchise player" Roy was voted Denvers top Athlete in 1997. Patrick also is part owner of the Quebec Ramparts of the QMJHL. Roy is a big contributor to the Ronald McDonald house. People consider Patrick Roy one of the best goalies in the game today, and he has proven that with three Stanley cups, Two Conn smyth Trophies and three Vezina awards.
