Born in Opole, Poland, Miroslav Klose has greatness in his genes; it just took him a while to achieve it. Miroslav’s mother Barbara was a member of the country’s handball team and his father Josef was a professional soccer player for AJ Auxerre.

Following a move to the Fatherland, Klose began playing for Blaubach-Diedelkopf, in the German seventh division, before graduating to the amateur wing of FC Kaiserslautern. Distressed by his lack of progress, Klose eventually began an apprenticeship in carpentry in case soccer didn’t pan out.

Fortunately, things began to click during the 2000-2001 season when Klose put his prolific scoring ability on display for Kaiserslautern in the Bundesliga. Impressed with what he saw, German coach Rudi Völler invited him to join the national squad for the 2002 World Cup. Although some questioned his decision, Völler clearly knew what he was doing, and Klose rewarded his confidence by scoring five goals en route to leading the team to the World Cup final against Brazil.

His remarkable success came as a surprise to many. According to Cesar Luis Menotti, the former coach of Argentina: “There is more football in him than is believed by people who only associate him with his heading ability. I have seen details that I thought were remarkable: the way he shakes off opponents, shields the ball, prepares goal chances. I like him, a lot in fact.”

Klose currently plays for Werder Bremen.
