Melody Federer was born in Texas- the daughter of a pastor. The family uprooted to St. Louis, where Melody spent most of her childhood, when she was just a girl. At the age of 18, she ran to New York to begin her life as an artist. While pursuing music, she moonlighted as a journalist in Washington D.C., an English teacher in Thailand, and even attempted flight attendant school. But when she heard the sounds of French pianist on a freezing New York winter night, she knew her life would change forever. Melody Federer spent the next three years singing 1930s French jazz in the streets and cafes of Paris. Soon after, she and her troupe of French musicians were asked to play clubs and festivals throughout Europe. It was during these nomadic years that Melody began writing songs in a style all her own, which she rightly named ‘Stride-Pop’.
Stride-Pop combines the 1930s stride piano of Montmartre and Harlem with the more contemporary, fresh, bouncy sound of today. On a visit to Los Angeles in 2009, Melody had a chance run-in with legendary artist Pat Boone. She decided to sing him “La Vie En Rose” on the spot. One week later he offered to produce her first studio album- An Americaine In Paris. Upon release of An Americaine In Paris in 2011, Melody made the move to Los Angeles. She returned to her roots- playing the streets of the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, only to realize that a redhead will not last long in the Southern California sun. After months of busking, she started work on her second studio album, recording with the kind of high-caliber producers that can only be found in Los Angeles. The new album represents her transition from an adventurous young gypsy into a woman who can stand on her own two feet in one of the toughest cities in the world.
