After the band was involved in a serious coach accident in 1984, Aston decided to leave the group. This had been brewing as a result of time on the road and feelings of internal dispute.

As she was still under contract, Aston felt unable to leave the group. However, she went to court and as a result ended up paying close to £400,000.

Close to financial ruin, Aston rebuilt her life, living in a small flat in Streatham. She now lives with her new partner and child. She set up a performing arts school in her name "Jay Aston School of Performing arts" where she taught youths, but after a few years the school was closed for financial and location reasons. She can recently be seen in the comic relief video "[I'm gonna be] 500 Miles" dancing with the fellow original members of the band - Bucks Fizz.
