Actress Demi Moore may have had a role on Friday in thwarting a possible suicide attempt after a woman sent a message to her on micro-blogging service Twitter indicating she planned to harm herself.

"Getting a knife, a big one that is sharp. Going to cut my arm down the whole arm so it doesn't waste time," said the Twitter message sent to Moore by a Twitter user who goes by the name @sandieguy.

"Hope you are joking," wrote back Moore, who goes by @mrskutcher on Twitter.

"Gbye ... gonna kill myself now," "sandieguy" added in another message.

Moore's husband, actor Ashton Kutcher, wrote on his Twitter feed @aplusk that his wife and other Twitter followers had reported the apparent suicide threat to the police in San Jose, California.

"Wifey and all of her followers that called the San Jose PD to report it well done," Kutcher wrote. "Wifey reported a suicide attempt based on a ... tweet she got and saved someones life. The woman is in the hospital now."

A San Jose police spokesman confirmed to ABC News that the department had received a number of calls concerning the suicide threat.

"We located the subject and that person was uninjured," spokesman Jermaine Thomas told ABCNews.com. "We did take the person into custody for evaluation."

Thomas declined to identify the individual but said it was a woman.

"This Twitter concept is so new, this is the first time it's led us to what could have been a very real crime," he added. "This could be yet another tool to find out what's going on out there."

The Twitter messages from the user who goes by "sandieguy" include numerous postings complaining about her ex-husband, how unhappy she is and one saying she is "looking for a job."

Kutcher is one of a number of celebrities who use Twitter and one of its most active users. More than 677,000 people have signed on to receive his updates. Moore has around 383,500 followers.
