An arrest warrant has been issued against US actress Lindsay Lohan for driving under the influence in 2007, Beverly Hills police said Saturday, but her lawyer said the warrant stems from a "misunderstanding."

According to officials, the warrant against the 22-year-old troubled star "stems from a May 2007 arrest of Miss Lohan for DUI (driving under the influence) and hit-and-run."

"The circumstances leading to the issuance of the warrant by the court are not readily available at this time. It is our hope that Miss Lohan will surrender herself so that this matter will be resolved in a timely manner," added police from the city west of Los Angeles.

After a stay in rehab, she was caught two months later for driving under the influence and possession of cocaine.

The arrests led her to ultimately serve a mere 84 minutes in jail. She was also sentenced to 10 hours of community service and three years of probation.

Lohan's lawyer Shawn Chapman Holley told television program Extra that "Ms. Lohan has been in compliance with all the terms and conditions of her probation and all orders of the Court.

"The warrant issued on Friday was, in our view, born out of a misunderstanding which I am confident I can clear up next week," Holley said on Extra's website.

Celebrity website TMZ.com, citing unnamed sources, said representatives of Lohan's alcohol education program told the court Friday she was not complying with the terms of her probation, and that the violation involved her enrollment in the program, and not an alcohol test.

Popular Hollywood blogger Perez Hilton claimed to have received a message from Lohan in which she protested the warrant.

"This warrant for my arrest is completely fabricated and it's a horrendous lie," Hilton quoted Lohan saying in her message.

"This will make me loose (sic) every single deal that I have right now. It's horrible."

The queen of Hollywood nights and a favorite target of the paparazzi, the former Disney child star was once considered one of the most promising actresses of her generation.

But her career has also dipped many times since 2005 amid legal woes, stops in rehab and cinematic flops.

In 2008, the star of "The Parent Trap," "Mean Girls" and "Bobby," received two Razzie Awards, the satirical awards presented to Hollywood's worst actors.
