| Biography of Courtney Thorne Smith |
Courtney Thorne-Smith initiated acting with The Ensemble Theatre Company in Northern California while still a student in high school. At age 18, she made her television debut in the CBS short-lived sitcom “Fast Time” as the unconfident Stacey Hamilton, a role Jennifer Jason Leigh had created in the hit film Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The same year, she also broke into movies as snooty cheerleader Alise in the above-average Lucas (1986) and Lindsey in Terry Carr’s drama Welcome to 18 (1986).
Thorne-Smith went on to work on the small screen, making TV movies The Thanksgiving Promise (1986) and Infidelity (1987). In addition, she picked up small roles in such minor films as Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise (1987) and Summer School (1987). The following year, Thorne-Smith was cast as the regular of teenaged day-care teacher Kristin Carlson in NBC sitcom “Day by Day” (1988-1989). But it was David E Kelley’s then-hit legal drama “L.A. Law” (1990) that garnered the actress first notice as recurring Kimberly, a L.A Lakers cheerleader who dated lawyer Michael Kuzak (Harry Hamlin). Also in 1990, Thorne-Smith costarred with C. Thomas Howell and Peter Horton in the comedy film Side Out (1990).
Two years later, she even enjoyed a bigger success as Allison Parker, the troubled alcoholic would-be advertising executive, in the new “90210” spin-off “Melrose Place” (1992). Thorne-Smith stayed as the lead until man-stealing barracuda Amanda Woodward (Heather Locklear) came along and pitched the ratings, as well as the series’ success. Although the focus was now on Locklear, Thorne-Smith still had a loyal cult of fans. She eventually left the primetime soap in 1997.
Thorne-Smith made a couple of TV movies, Breach of Conduct (1994) and Beauty’s Revenge (1995), and guest starred in such shows as “Grapevine,” “Partners” and “Spin City” during her long-running stints in Melrose Place. In 1997, she returned to feature with the comedy-romance The Lovemaster, co-starring George Wendt and Craig Shoemaker.
The same year, Thorne-Smith rejoined the creator David E Kelly to portray attorney Georgia Thomas for his series “Ally McBeal,” aired by Fox. The series became a huge hit and Thorne-Smith took home a Screen Actor Guild for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series in 1999. The actress remained with the role until 2000. In addition, Thorne-Smith also took part in “Ally” (1999), the half four version of Ally McBeal which focused on Ally’s personal stories.
During her hectic scheduled on TV, Thorne-Smith also shared the top bill with Scott ‘Carrot Top’ Thompson in the Alex Zamm-helmed comedy Chairman of the Board (1998). The following year, she branched out to modeling after penning a contract with renowned cosmetic Revlon as their spokesperson for a new product named Skin Stays Fresh. In 2001, she costarred opposite Jim Belushi in the ABC fall sitcom “According To Jim.” |
