Roger Taylor was born on Tuesday, July 26, 1949, under the astrological sign of Leo, at The King's Lynn Hospital (located in King's Lynn, Norfolk). Proud parents, Winifred and Michael Taylor were overjoyed at the birth of their first son, Roger Meddows Taylor. Meddows, a family name, had been passed through several generations.
Gaywood Primary was Roger's first school, where he spent three years time. His younger sister by four years, Clare, had just been born when the family moved to Cornwall. Roger then began Bosvigo School.
When Roger was eight, he convinced himself that he wanted to play guitar. He started by teaching himself some simple chords on the ukulele. It was around this time that Roger decided that this is what he should do, create a band.
Roger had several bands in the pre-queen days. Some of which included the Bubblingover Boys (in which Roger played the ukulele)-1957, the Cousin Jacks-1963, lasting only a year, Johnny Quale and the Reaction-1965 (later changed to Reaction), and Smile-1968. In 1961 he was given a tom-tom, a bass drum and cymbals.
1960 marked the year in which Roger recieved a choral scholarship to the Truro Cathedral School, forcing him to abandon the Bubblingover Boys. Roger did not thoroughly enjoy being a member of the choir, as it required him to sing several times every Sunday, and on special occasions.Although it was a boarding school, Roger got to attend only during the day, seeing as he lived close to the school.
In 1961 he was given a tom-tom, a bass drum and cymbals, seeing as he had grown bored with the ukulele/guitar. Before recieving these, however, he had to make do with saucepans and knitting needles. After Christmas, Roger bought himself his first real symbol, a Zildjian cymbol.
March 15, 1965 saw Roger on his first enterance into a competition, 'The Rock and Rhythm Championships.' His band at the time, Johnny Quale and the Reaction, felt confident in their abilities. In September of the same year, Johnny Quale left the band, leaving it to be called 'Reaction.' Roger had now become the lead vocalist of the band. Roger's voice has been noted for it's raspy like qualities, and it's ability to reach the hard to hit high notes (remember the high pitched 'galileo' in Bohemian Rhapsody?). Once again, Reaction entered 'The Rock and Rhythm Championships.' This time, however, they won.
In 1967, Roger went on to enroll at The London Hospital Medical School. He left his previous school with seven O levels, and three A levels. The sciences were his strength so, with some advice from his teachers, he decided to become a dentist.
When Roger left for London, Reaction split, but Roger had full intentions on finding another band. During one his many searches for a band, he noticed something pinned to the college message board. The ad was seeking someone who could drum like Ginger Baker/Mitch Mitchell. Roger quickly contacted the number on the card, which is where he met his next band, Smile.
Smile was formed by Tim Staffel and future Queen guitarist, Brian May. The three of them worked well together, and eventually released a single, called 'Step On Me.' The single was not a success, and the band was somewhat discouraged.
Eventually, Smile's lead vocalist Tim Staffel came across Freddie Mercury (at the time, Farrohk Bulsara) and brought him along to some of the rehearsals. As time would soon tell, the band formally known as Smile, became Queen, consisting of Freddie, Roger and Brian.
1976 Roger fell in love with a young French woman by the name of Dominique Beyrand, when they met at the Hyde Park Concert. Together they had two children, Felix Luther (born May 22, 1980) and Rory Eleanore (born May 29, 1986). On January 3, 1988, the couple got married.
25 days after his marriage, Roger left Dominique for Debby Leng (she can be seen in the Breakthru video, the blonde at the beginning). Eventually he divorced Dominique, and moved in with Debby. They had three children together, Rufus Tiger (born March 8, 1991), Tiger Lily (born October 10, 1994) and Lola Daisy May (born April 9, 2000).
Until quite recently, Roger was a relatively heavy smoker. In terms of what he is doing now, he's got several projects in which he's involved! Some of which include the We Will Rock You musical, and the 'Live at the Bowl' cd/dvd. Surely in the future he'll have many more plans up his sleeve!
