After college, Carthage, Missouri native Jann Carl began her career as a reporter for WLS-TV in Chicago, in which she also anchored the local new breaking during “Good Morning America,” and after a year, moved to Los Angeles to join KABC-TV's “Eye on L.A.” magazine show. She served as host and reporter of the show from 1984 to 1987. After this tenure, Carl's career gained boost when she co-anchored the Los Angeles No. 1 hit “News at Ten” for KTLA-TV, a station she joined in 1987. During her stint there, she picked up three Los Angeles Emmy Awards for her reporting.

After leaving “News at Ten” in 1995, Carl achieved even more recognition and prominence as a corespondent for “Entertainment Tonight” (1981-?), the #1 syndicated entertainment newsmagazine in the world. She joined the show since December 1995. Her responsibilities include serving as anchor of the Entertainment Tonight/Blockbuster Video in-store network, interviewing celebrity, reporting general entertainment news, attending film premieres and other industry events, and making on-set visits to feature films and television series.

In addition to her hectic schedule on ET, Carl also found time pursuing other projects. She made film appearance as herself in Warren Beatty's Bulworth (1998) and co-hosted the nationally syndicated “Blockbuster Entertainment Awards.” Besides, she co-hosted with Jerry Lewis the “Labor Day Telethon” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association from 1998 to 2000. Carl also appeared in several TV talk show such as “Larry King Live” (2003) and “The Oprah Winfrey Show” (2004). In 2005, she appeared in the reality-TV “America's Next Top Model.”
