Ian Duncan Willatt ("Duncan") was born in Stoke on Trent on 12 February 1917 and died on 23 March 2009, aged 92. A scholarship at Newcastle under Lyme School was followed by an offer of a place to read medicine at the age of 17 at Edinburgh University. He graduated in 1939 and undertook the role of house physician at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh. He later married Ruth Evershed (obituary, BMJ 2009;338:b2512), a former fellow Edinburgh medical student, on 18 February 1941 at Thakeham, Sussex.

In 1941 he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and rose to the rank of major. He would proudly relate that during his military service he had met Lord Mountbatten and that he had shown Field Marshal Slim round the hospital he ran during the Burma campaign. He was awarded the Burma Star.

His initial ambition, after the war, was to become a consultant physician. .
